Obituary for Arleen M Michael

Arleen M. Michael, 90, died on September 7, 2017, in El Dorado Hills. She was born on September 24, 1926, in Lincoln, Nebraska, daughter of Ruben Herbert Heinz and Marie Schleiger Heinz. She attended Lincoln High School and the University of Nebraska, receiving a Bachelor of Music Education degree in 1947, and a Master of Education degree in 1951. Her interest in music therapy for emotionally disturbed children led to a career change from public school teaching to inpatient instruction at the Nebraska Psychiatric Institute. She remained there until 1974, becoming the Director of Educational Therapy and a member of the faculty at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. She then moved to the faculty in Special Education at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO), where she earned her Doctor of Education degree in 1979, and retired from there in 1987. Among other honors, she received the UNO Excellence in Teaching Award in 1985. During her career she served on the Board of Trustees of Doane College in Crete, Nebraska. She married Bill Michael in 1949, and they lived in and raised a family in Omaha, moving to Beaver Lake near Plattsmouth, Nebraska, in 1985. They were long-time members of First Central Congregational Church in Omaha, where, among other things, Arleen served as Moderator in the early 1990s. After Bill’s death in 1997, Arleen moved to Sacramento. There she was a member of Carmichael Presbyterian Church and served as a Deacon, Stephen Minister, and Bell Choir Director, and an active member on resident boards and groups at the senior centers where she resided, first at Eskaton Village and then at Ponte Palmero.
In her life, she recalled as especially important her passion for music and for learning, “not just school or book learning, but life-long learning. It makes us more productive citizens and happier people.” She held as one of her greatest treasures “meeting and marrying Bill Michael.” She is survived by her four children: Anne Jacoby, of Manchester, New Hampshire, Stephen Michael, of Omaha, Nebraska, Marsha Birdsall Benfield, of El Dorado Hills, and Douglas Michael, of Lexington, Kentucky, as well as ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, September 24, at Carmichael Presbyterian Church in Carmichael. Flowers are welcome to be sent to the memorial service; Arleen loved flowers. Donations are suggested in Arleen’s memory to the Philanthropic Educational Organization, of which Arleen was a member and active supporter, at P.E.O.
