Obituary for Mary Louise Davis

Mary Louise Heath Davis, of Rancho Cordova, passed away at Eskaton Lodge, Gold River, in Rancho Cordova on Friday, July 27, 2018 at the age of 80. Mary is predeceased by her parents, Merlin and Edith Heath and her step father, Archie Heath as well as brothers, Frank, Charles, Leo and sister in law Doris Heath.

Mary was born January 9, 1938 in San Bernardino, CA to Merlin Ernest Heath and Edith Marie Johnson, she was an especially welcomed girl with three older brothers. She was the fourth child in a family of six children.

After graduating from Pacific High School in 1955, Mary got her first real job as a long distance operator at Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company in San Bernardino where she worked for a year to earn enough money to go to college. She started attending Brigham Young University in Provo, UT, in September, 1956. Two months later, she met her future husband, Sterling P Davis in a Zoology Class, where they were lab partners dissecting a sheep’s eye. They were married August 23, 1957 in the Los Angeles, CA, LDS Temple,

They made their first home in Moscow, Idaho, where Sterling attended the University of Idaho to earn his Bachelor of Science in Forestry, Fisheries Management, and Mary worked as a waitress and carhop, and later doing secretary work to earn her PHT degree (Putting Hubby Through!)

Sterling got a fellowship, and was able to complete his Master Degree in Moscow, where they welcomed their first daughter, Sharon. After finishing school, he got a job with the State of California, Fish and Game Department at Terminal Island in Southern CA. They made their home in Long Beach, CA, and later welcomed their second daughter, Barbara Jean.

Soon, Sterling got a promotion with Fish and Game, and moved the family to Tahoe City, CA. While in Tahoe City, Mary did daycare to help with extras for their home.

Sterling received another promotion in Los Angeles but, before leaving Tahoe, they welcomed their first son, Douglas Scott to the family. They made their next home in Alhambra, CA.

In 1965, the State of CA once again moved the family, this time to Sacramento, where they rented a home in the growing young community of Rancho Cordova. Soon they decided that Rancho Cordova was where they wanted to settle down and raise their family, so they purchased a practically new, four bedroom home in April of that year. That month, they welcomed their fourth child, a daughter, Sandra Louise, and two years later, another daughter, Carol Ann was born. Their sixth child and very welcome second son, Gary Sterling was born seven years later.

Mary will be remembered for being active and involved in many community activities, starting with PTA at Cordova Lane Elementary School and moving on to many years of leadership in the Third District PTA, including a stint as Third District President.

She was a very active member of the local TOPS CA 952 group.

Mary was also very involved in Boy Scouts serving for many years as Advancement Chairman, and earned the Silver Bear Award. Her two sons, Doug and Gary Davis, as well as at least eight grandsons earned the Eagle Scout award. She was a very proud Eagle Scout Mom/ Grandma!

She also served in many leadership positions in the LDS Church, including ten years as the Girl’s Camp Director.

She raised six children, all of whom attended Cordova Lane Elementary, Mitchell Jr. High, and Cordova High. Many of her grandchildren also attended these schools.

Mary is survived by her husband of 61 years, Sterling P Davis, her children, Sharon (Allen) Turley, Barbara (Kent), Douglas (Paula), Sandra Davis, Carol (Shawn) Tousley, and Gary (Heather) Davis, Twenty Nine Grandchildren, Fourteen Great-grandchildren, her sister, Pearl (Dan) Leach, her Brother, James Heath, sister-in-laws, Netha and Irene Heath as well as many, many nieces and nephews.
