Obituary for Mary M. McDonald

Lifelong resident of Folsom, Mary McDonald, passed away peacefully in her home on December 2, 2017, at the age of 100.

Mary was born February 17, 1917, in the former town of Marigold, in Yuba County, California. Shortly thereafter, her family settled in Folsom, where she lived for 99 years. Mary had many fond memories of Folsom when it was just a small village with only a few residents and storefronts.

As a young woman growing up in the twentieth century, Mary worked hard for her education and fought to find work that was rewarding and challenging. She was a 1935 graduate of Folsom High School and later graduated from Heald College. Her career at McClellan Air Force Base spanned 31 years. She also worked for the Sacramento Bee, and managed the office of former mayor Jack Kipp’s appliance store for ten years before retiring.

While Mary’s generosity extended to many organizations, she was a devoted friend and supporter of the Sisters of Mercy and Mercy Foundation for many years. Her philanthropy was largely focused in her hometown. Through Mercy Foundation, she contributed to a number of major facility expansions at Mercy Hospital of Folsom to meet the health care needs of a growing community. Mary was honored as Mercy Hospital of Folsom’s “Sweetheart of the Year” on Valentine’s Day in 2009. She was a member of Mercy Foundation’s McAuley and Legacy Societies and was the 2014 recipient of Mercy Foundation’s Inspiring Philanthropy Award.

Mary lived a life built on hard work, loyalty and community and will be missed by family members and many friends. She was the daughter of William Irvine McDonald and Catherine McDonald (Rice) and sister of William Robert McDonald and Jack McDonald. She is survived by nephew William (Bill) McDonald, grand-nephews Kevin McDonald, Ryan McDonald and Sean Vergara, grand-nieces Kelly McDonald and Amaya Vergara, and cousin Robert Crossett.

Vigil and visitation will be held Thursday, December 7 at Miller Funeral Home at 507 Scott Street in Folsom from 5:00-8:00pm with Rosary at 6:00pm. Mass of Christian burial will be held St. John the Baptist Catholic Church at 307 Montrose Drive in Folsom on Friday, December 8 at 10:00am with a reception to follow.
